Mad Monkey Coogee Beach puts you right on the sand at one end of the iconic Coogee to Bondi coastal walk—a must-do when visiting Sydney. Stay in the laid-back beachside suburb of Coogee, where you can relax like a local while still being close to the action. Getting around is easy—regular buses stop right outside the hostel and run day and night into central Sydney. From Central Station, you’ll have quick access to the rest of the city and greater New South Wales. We’re also just a short stroll from the Coogee Beach Cricket Oval, minutes from Royal Randwick Racecourse (Sydney’s home of horse racing), and conveniently close to the UNSW Randwick campus.

Coogee
The Aboriginal Story of Coogee

More Than Just a Beach Name

If you’ve ever wondered where Coogee got its name, here’s a fun fact: it comes from an Aboriginal word—something like koojay, koo-chai, or koojah—that means “the smell of drying seaweed.” Yep, back in the day (and even now, sometimes!) seaweed would wash up on the beach and give off a pretty unique seaside scent.

The name comes from the Dharug language, spoken by the Eora Nation—the original locals of the Sydney area. The Coogee area itself was home to the Bidjigal and Gadigal people, who lived here long before it became the beachside spot we know and love today.
